Amid public calls for action, S&D delegation in New York for the 2019 Climate Action, Sustainable Development Goals Summits

Amid urgent calls by the public who want global leaders to take action and save our planet, a delegation of the Socialists and Democrats is in New York to actively participate in the 2019 Climate Action Summit, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Summit and the High-Level Dialogue Financing for Development.

The meetings will be held at the UN headquarters in New York, during which the delegation will insist on the urgent implementation of the SDGs as well as the actions needed to tackle climate change.

The delegation is being led by the vice-president responsible for a Green New Deal, Miriam Dalli, the S&D development (DEVE) committee coordinator, Udo Bullmann, the DEVE committee member Marc Tarabella and the environment (ENVI) committee member, Javier López.

This visit is one of the very first official missions of the newly elected European Parliament. The S&D delegation will also join global activist Greta Thunberg in the climate strike march taking place in New York. The S&D Group is also taking part in other marches across Europe.

The S&Ds are actively promoting climate change actions, ensuring that this remains at the core of the Group’s progressive work and high on this mandate’s political agenda.

During the mission, the S&D members will reconfirm their strong commitment for leaving no one behind, fighting inequality and poverty, and achieving a sustainable future for all.

Just a few months ago, thanks to the pressure exercised by the S&D Group, the European Parliament adopted the annual strategic report on the implementation of the SDGs. The report calls on the Commission to present a clear roadmap to integrate the Sustainable Development Goals in the EU policies.
